Monday Chess Club

Chess club sessions run every Monday, 5:30pm to 7:30pm, at the Preston Library, 266 Gower Street Preston.
Monday Chess Club resumes on Monday 13 April (Yes, during the school holidays!).

These sessions are free to join and you are welcome to drop-in and leave at anytime. Players of all abilities and ages are welcome. Parents of children under 12 should remain in the library.
Solve puzzles or play a game with someone of your own skill level.
Open to both adults and children.

Our large bi-annual tournament is back!

When: Sunday 24 May 2026; 1:00PM until 5:00PM
Where: Preston Shire Hall, 286 Gower St Preston 3072
Format: 7-round swiss-style tournament at the time control 10min + 2sec
The tournament will be rated by the ACF (Australian Chess Federation) in its June 2026 list.
Prizes: Open: 1st $90, 2nd $70, 3rd $50
Under 18: 1st $50, $30, $20
Trophies and Medals in Under 15, Under 12 and Under 9 categories
Registration Fee: Online: $25 / $20 Concession, or  Cash $20 / $15 Conc

Format: 7-round Swiss-style tournament at the time control 10 min + 2 sec

Darebin 2026 Autumn Chess Open (Rapid)

A Rapid Chess Tournament over 7 weeks

When: Fridays 5:40 – 7:00 pm, 20th February until 10th April (no session on 3rd April Public Holiday)
Where: Preston Library Meeting Room, 266 Gower St Preston 3072
Format: 7-round match tournament at the time control 13 + 2. Each round consists of two games, one with each colour, against the same opponent. Each player can request up to two half-point byes during the first five rounds. (This will also apply for late registrations)
Prizes: Open: 1st $100, 2nd $75, 3rd $50
Junior: 1st Trophy, 2nd Silver Medal, 3rd Bronze Medal
Registration Fee: $30 for all 7 weeks (not each week)
Scoring & Tiebreaks: Each round’s match is scored 1, ½ or 0 for an overall match win, draw or loss. Match points are then used first to decide standings, followed by game points.
**NOTE**: The Rapid Tournament will take a pause on Friday 3 April due to the public holiday

Congratulations FM Chris Wallis

Club President, FM Christopher Wallis competed in the Australasian Masters Chess tournament in December 2025. He finished equal first and achieved an IM Norm with a result of 7 points from 9 games.
